Week 1: Game on.

The day has come…the SUMMER READING CHALLENGE is on! You’re already ahead of the game since you’ve found the blog. Great job, you!

Bill Murray- YOU’RE AWESOME

Each Monday, I’ll post info on the weekly prizes and challenges here (and on Facebook, Instagram, and the library’s Teen Space). Before I get to this summer’s goodies, here’s what you need to get started:

A Playbook.

That’s it. Pick one up at BPL. Keep it safe – you’ll be keeping track of your points in this playbook all summer.

How to play:

1. Fill in the number of minutes you read and do the challenges of your choice each week. Add up your points and get them checked by a staff member before the end of the week to enter the Weekly Raffle.

2. 100 points gets you one raffle ticket. Extra points get you extra tickets (100 extra points = 1 raffle ticket).

3. ƒEvery raffle ticket is re-entered into the Grand Prize Raffle, which will be held on August 17. If you miss the Weekly Raffle deadline, you can still use those points for Grand Prize tickets.

„4. Players that reach 400 points by August 14 get to attend an exclusive Challenger’s Party on August 17. Finishers (players that reach 800 points) also win an awesome YA book of their choice.

And now, what you’ve all been waiting for…THE PRIZES.

There will be a prize up for grabs each week. The prizes get bigger as the summer goes on. Week 1’s prize is…(drum roll, please)…a $5 gift certificate to Jamba Juice! Check back each week for info on the next prize.

FINALLY, there are not one, but TWO grand prizes this year.

An Instax Mini…

Summer is coming…

Guys, the Summer Reading Challenge is under a week away. Are you ready?

I know I am.

Things are going to be a little different this year. You’ll still earn points by reading and doing tech-y and crafty challenges, but the prizes are bigger and better. I’ll be revealing the weekly prizes and challenges each Monday on here (and on Facebook and Instagram, too). Come by the library starting Monday to pick up your playbook, then check in weekly to see what’s up for grabs and redeem your points. Check back here on Monday for all the deets!

In the meantime – what books are on your to-read list for the summer? What books should I make time to read this summer? Share your recs in the comments!

NaNoWriMo Teen Corkboard Shared Novel

Okay… Here goes… The teen novel crafted by many hands over the month of November.

The HOOONK of a car horn launched me out of my seat.  Okay, okay, I thought, regaining my composure as I stepped on the gas.  So what had I been daydreaming about?  I had a lot going on.  School, friends, stuff happens.  But since I’m on my way to the hospital, I thought, compose yourself.  Ed wouldn’t benefit from seeing me like this.  I pictured his ginger hair, his blue eyes, his freckles.  Just last week, everything was fine.  We were spending as much time as possible together.  Now there he was laying in the hospital bed.  I felt helpless, not being able to do anything.  I walked over to his bedside table and took a live petal from the plant.  his mother had probably already been by.

I’m an orphan.  I had an orphan buddy, but we was really my brother.  I want him to change for he has been the same for 9 years.  Anyway, brothers are fleas or leeches.  Although sometimes, it can be very rewarding to…

Why do we run from the truth?  Maybe because once we accept it, you can never unaccept it.  Maybe that’s why life is so hard.  Because all we do is run from the truth.

I went to Sherman Holmes Elementary School in Washington.  Most people called me a freak.  I didn’t say much to stop the incessant bullying treatment I was given.  I just bent my head and took the blows inflicted upon me.  Of course I didn’t say anything.  No one says anything.  No one wants to help you. It’s almost like the world is a secret.  But let’s not get into that depressing stuff…

Duct!

DUCT poster

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s all sorts of cool stuff you can make out of duct tape!  And we’ll be making some of them!  Here are some of the cool ideas we’ve seen online that we could make on Monday:

Well, today is our giant Hunger Games Water fight in Maiben park, and it’s our official wrap-up to the Summer Reading Game.

And what an epic wrap-up it should be!

Image

After a giant battle of squirt guns and water balloons only one tribute will be left standing and we’ll be giving the full set of Hunger Games novels and a gift certificate to the AMC theaters to our victor.  Everyone who comes will have a great time, and all attendees get an extra 100 points to spend in our Summer Game Store PLUS an entry into the drawing for our grand prizes: A Nexus 7 tablet and a Sony Bloggie videocamera!

Now, onward to the leaderboard!  We had a lot more people turn in game passes this week, and we’ll be accepting them until next Monday night.  After the points are totaled up we’ll draw out of a hat on Tuesday and contact our winners right afterward!
